The Highest Risk Is After the Final Whistle
Most stadium incidents at major football tournaments do not occur during the match. They occur at entry queues, concourse choke points, stairwells, and the post-match dispersal zone in the first 30 minutes after the final whistle. For families, that is the part of the day that needs the most thought.
Pre-Match: Walk the Plan, Not Just the Route
When you arrive at the venue, identify your section's nearest two exits, the nearest first-aid station, the family meeting point if anyone is separated, and the location of the closest hard structure (column, doorway) to brace against if a crowd surges.
Reading Crowd Pressure
Crowd-crush dynamics build slowly: density increases, individual movement becomes constrained, then crowd movement starts behaving like a fluid. Warning signs include not being able to lift your arms freely, not being able to choose your direction, and pressure you feel in your chest rather than in your back. If you feel any of these, do not push back — angle diagonally toward the edge of the crowd.
Family Protocol: One Adult, One Child
If you are with children, assign one adult to one child and do not switch. Children should know the adult's full name, the hotel name, and a memorized phone number — written on a card in their pocket, not only on a phone.
Post-Match Dispersal
Plan to either leave 5–10 minutes early or wait 30 minutes after the final whistle. Either reduces exposure to the densest egress window. Pre-arrange the meet point with your driver away from the immediate stadium curb — drivers cannot stage where the crowd is.
