Mega-Events Attract the Whole Economy of Digital Fraud

Stadium Wi-Fi, hotel networks, SIM-swap attempts, e-ticket phishing, and rideshare account takeovers all scale alongside the tournament. Most of it is preventable with a short pre-trip checklist.

Public Wi-Fi at Stadiums and Hotels

Treat all public Wi-Fi as hostile. Use a corporate VPN or a reputable consumer VPN for any sensitive activity. Disable auto-join for unknown networks. For executives, prefer cellular data or a mobile hotspot from the principal's device over venue Wi-Fi entirely.

    SIM Swap and Account Takeover

SIM-swap attacks rise around major events because principals are visible, distracted, and often outside their normal security perimeter. Mitigations: enable carrier-side SIM-lock or port-out PIN, move two-factor authentication off SMS to an authenticator app or hardware key, and confirm recovery email accounts have strong unique passwords and 2FA.

    E-Ticket and Hospitality Phishing

Expect targeted phishing posing as FIFA, the venue, the hotel, the airline, or the hospitality vendor. Standard rules: never click ticket or itinerary links from email, always go to the source app or the bookmarked website, and verify any "urgent" payment request by phone using a number you already have on file.

    Device Discipline on the Ground

Use a clean travel device where possible — minimal data, no saved corporate credentials, no household-staff or family-office access. Lock screens with biometrics plus PIN, enable remote wipe, and avoid charging from public USB ports (use your own charger and outlet).

    Family and Staff Briefing

The weakest link is rarely the principal. It is usually a spouse, child, nanny, or assistant who has access to calendars, photos, or shared accounts. Brief the whole travel party on what good looks like before departure.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is hotel Wi-Fi safe to use during the World Cup?

Treat all hotel and venue Wi-Fi as untrusted. Use a corporate or reputable VPN, disable auto-connect to open networks, and avoid logging into financial or sensitive corporate systems on those networks.

What digital exposure should executives manage before World Cup travel?

Lock down social geotags, review what household and staff accounts post, scrub publicly listed travel patterns, and brief the family that posts should resume only after departure.
